Prostate cancer cases rising in the country: Prof Anup Kumar

Early diagnosis and timely treatment are crucial in tackling the rising incidences of the prostate cancers in the country, said experts while expressing concerns during Masterclass in Uro-oncology and Live Operative International Robotic/Workshop in Delhi.

However, this can be achieved only through massive awareness campaigns, they said.

“The number of cases of prostate cancer is rising in India. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer detected among males,” Prof Anup Kumar, Head, Department of Urology and Renal Transplant, Safdarjung Hospital, said.

Speaking to Drug Today Medical Times in the sideline of this workshop, Prof Kumar pointed out that Department of Urology at Safdarjung Hospital in collaboration with ICMR analysed the cancer registries of large Indian cities and found that prostate cancer is the most common cancer among males and this number is increasing.

Prof Kumar said that patients come with advanced stage of prostate cancer in most of the cases.

“We want awareness to be increased about the cancer so that we diagnose the disease early,” Prof Kumar stressed.

Difficulty on urinating, uncontrolled and frequent urination, blood in the urine, blood in the semen and back pain could be possible symptoms of prostate cancer.

While explaining about the prevention, Prof Kumar said that periodic screening of prostate cancer after 50 years of age, drinking two to three liter of water every day, thirty minutes of exercise daily, reducing salt intake and staying away from tobacco, alcohol and junk food can prevent prostate cancer.

While informing about workshop, Prof Kumar said that this is one of the biggest urology workshop in India.

A total of 650 doctors registered to participate in the workshop and more than 2,500 doctors took part virtually.

Doctors from twenty countries participated in the workshop. A total of 20 robotic and lab surgeries were telecast while fifteen faculties from India and five from USA, UK and European countries took part in the workshop.

“This conference was organsied is part of International Awareness month of prostate cancer,” Prof Kumar said.
