Mehandi aroma triggers seizure in 9-year-old girl

Doctors at Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram Hospital reported treating an unusual case of a nine-year-old girl who presented with suspected seizures caused by Mehndi Aroma.

The Department of Neurology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH), recently reported an unusual case study of a 9-year-old girl suffering epileptic seizures after the application of Mehndi (Henna).

“This case has been reported for the first time,” Dr (Col) PK Sethi, Senior Consultant, Department of Neurology, SGRH, said while speaking to Drug Today Medical Times.
He added that this case study was published on January 23, 2023, in the latest edition of Clinical Neurophysiology.

According to the hospital, the girl abruptly lost consciousness, resulting in a fall and 20 seconds of convulsions. "A year later, she had two similar seizures after applying Mehndi,"

"The girl was brought to the hospital for a further checkup recently," Dr (Col) Sethi said.

“This was an unusual case of Reflex Epilepsy, where epileptic seizures are consistently induced by identifiable and objective–specific triggers as against other epileptic seizures, which are usually unprovoked. In our reported case, seizures were consistently induced by the application of Mehndi.”

"In the hospital, Mehndi was applied to the patient's right hand. Mehndi has a distinct earthy aroma. She began having seizures as soon as the Mehndi-applied hand was brought near her chest," Dr Sethi said.

Video- electroencephalography revealed an organized background with a posterior rhythm of 9 Hz. The patient became restless, followed by seizures,” he further explained.

“In our patient, seizures were not triggered by mere application of mehndi on hands and feet rather it was the fragrance which acted as the stimulus leading to stimulation of functional anatomic networks,” Dr Sethi added.

“The patient was prescribed Sodium valproate, and parents were advised to avoid exposure to Mehndi. The patient is stable now with no reported case of seizure,” Dr Sethi informed.
