Tips from Dr. Radha Jain: Staying Healthy During Monsoon Season

The monsoon season brings relief from the scorching heat but also introduces various health challenges due to increased humidity and stagnant water, which foster the spread of several illnesses. To help the public maintain their health during this season, Drug Today Medical Times interviewed Dr. Radha Jain, President of the East Delhi Medical Association and a renowned gynecologist serving East Delhi.

Dr. Jain highlighted the importance of awareness and preventive measures to stay healthy and enjoy the monsoon. She pointed out several common monsoon diseases and shared practical advice on how to avoid them.

Monsoon illnesses such as dengue, malaria, cholera, typhoid, leptospirosis, cold and flu, and fungal infections are prevalent during this season. Dengue, transmitted by mosquitoes, causes high fever, joint pain, and rashes, while malaria, another mosquito-borne disease, leads to fever, chills, and sweating. Cholera, a water-borne disease, results in severe diarrhea and dehydration. 

Typhoid, spread through contaminated food and water, brings high fever, weakness, and abdominal pain. Leptospirosis occurs from exposure to water contaminated with the urine of infected animals, causing fever, headache, and muscle pain. Viral infections like cold and flu cause cough, cold, and fever. Fungal infections, due to the damp environment, affect the skin, nails, and scalp.

To prevent these diseases, Dr. Jain recommends using mosquito repellents and nets to avoid bites. Keeping your surroundings clean and free of stagnant water helps reduce mosquito breeding. It's essential to drink boiled or filtered water to prevent water-borne diseases, and consume freshly cooked food instead of street food to avoid contamination. Maintaining good hygiene by washing hands regularly with soap and water is crucial. Wearing protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts and pants, minimizes skin exposure to infections.

Avoiding walking in floodwater reduces the risk of leptospirosis by preventing contact with contaminated water. Keeping your feet dry by wearing waterproof footwear and changing socks regularly helps prevent fungal infections. Strengthening your immune system through a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is also important. Staying informed by keeping updated with weather reports and health advisories ensures you are aware of any potential health risks.

By following these recommendations, you can protect yourself and your loved ones from common monsoon illnesses and enjoy the season to its fullest. Stay safe and stay healthy.
