India Advances Disability Support with Nationwide Camps and Accessibility Campaign

Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment BL Verma recently informed the Parliament on the progress of the Scheme of Assistance to Persons with Disabilities for Purchase/Fitting of Aids/Appliances (ADIP) Scheme. Under this scheme, continuous camps are held to distribute aids and assistive devices to eligible individuals with disabilities.

The Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), operating under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD), is the primary agency responsible for implementing the ADIP Scheme. As of July 22, 2024, ALIMCO has successfully organized distribution camps in 82 out of 100 designated aspirational blocks, benefiting approximately 11,189 individuals with disabilities.

In addition to the ADIP Scheme, the Department promotes disability-friendly infrastructure through the Accessible India Campaign (AIC). This campaign aims to improve accessibility in the built environment, transport systems, and information and communication sectors.

The Department has developed sector-specific accessibility guidelines and standards in collaboration with 20 other central government ministries and departments. These guidelines provide a regulatory framework for universal accessibility and support the AIC's goals by ensuring effective implementation across various sectors.
