The relentless turmoil in Syria has wreaked havoc on its healthcare system, leaving hospitals, clinics, and medical supply chains in ruins, devastated by airstrikes and crippling shortages of essential resources. Following the collapse of the Assad regime, the Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) has risen to prominence as a crucial force in the restoration of healthcare services. SAMS has boldly navigated the challenges of former opposition-controlled areas, delivering vital medical care, education, and mental health services, frequently in the face of life-threatening circumstances. 

SAMS President Dr. Mufaddal Hamadeh underscored the steadfast resilience of the organisation, stating, "Our staff and members remained motivated during the most challenging times despite all challenges." Today, we stand with renewed determination, driven by a shared vision to collectively reconstruct our healthcare system, united once more in purpose. 

The organization stands as a beacon of resilience, showcasing a formidable emergency response while steadfastly dedicating itself to the enduring enhancement of health systems. SAMS operates an impressive network of 12 hospitals, 22 clinics, and numerous mobile medical units, delivering more than 9,000 medical services each day. This encompasses essential assistance for chronic conditions, maternal health, trauma recovery, and mental wellness services. 

Relentless adversity continues to pose significant obstacles. Numerous healthcare facilities are in dire need of immediate rehabilitation, including Aleppo University Hospital and a pediatric hospital in northwest Syria, both of which have suffered recent damage from airstrikes.  A critical lack of trained medical personnel, essential medicines, and necessary equipment further intensifies the dire situation, plunging millions into a state of inadequate care.

In the midst of a humanitarian catastrophe, Syria grapples with an alarming malnutrition crisis, where the most vulnerable—its children—suffer the dire consequences of food insecurity. The relentless grip of conflict has ravaged agricultural output, shattered food supply networks, and plunged millions into the depths of poverty. The alarming surge in malnutrition rates is a stark reminder of the dire situation facing millions. UN agencies reveal that nearly 12 million Syrians are grappling with food insecurity. 

The disintegration of the Assad regime has significantly intensified the challenges faced by humanitarian efforts in the fight against malnutrition. Numerous areas continue to be unreachable, hindered by pressing security issues, significant logistical obstacles, and insufficient financial resources. The ongoing conflict has significantly reduced the capacity of local farmers, necessitating a reliance on external aid that is insufficient to meet the overwhelming needs.

The crisis of malnutrition in Syria casts a dark shadow over the future of its children, jeopardizing their growth, stunting their cognitive development, and undermining their overall health. In a world where healthcare systems are teetering on the brink of collapse, it is imperative that we rally together to tackle these pressing needs. We cannot ignore the urgent coordination among international organisations, local actors, and emerging governance structures; it is not just necessary but also a call to action.
