Sage, a major independent academic publisher, has announced the acquisition of Mary Ann Liebert, Inc., a well-known global media firm with a rich history of biotechnology, life sciences, and specialized medical publishing. Sage's portfolio will now include over 100 peer-reviewed publications, including significant titles in public health, policy, and medical technology. This transaction also includes significant B2B media brands, including Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News (GEN) and Inside Precision Medicine.
Sage's CEO, Blaise Simqu, emphasized the acquisition's historical significance, citing Mary Ann Liebert and its founder, Sara Miller McCune, as pioneers in defining the publishing environment. "Both women took bold risks, created vital academic platforms, and helped foster research that serves humanity," she said. He noted that the acquisition would allow Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. to continue to thrive under Sage's independent and entrepreneurial leadership.
As part of the transaction, Sage will publish a selection of life sciences and medical journals under the Liebert banner, while Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. will continue to publish journals under its name. This collaboration seeks to expand the reach and impact of Mary Ann Liebert's influential publications.
Since its founding in 1980, Mary Ann Liebert, Inc. has pioneered publishing in new fields such as genetic engineering, tissue engineering, and patient care. Among its innovative titles are Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News (GEN), a significant media brand in biotechnology today, and AIDS Research & Human Retroviruses, established during the AIDS pandemic. More recently, the business has published journals like AI in Precision Oncology and AI in Neuroscience.
