NHRC Seeks Report on Chhattisgarh Schoolchildren Falling Ill Due to Factory Emissions

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of reports that 38 students from a government-run school in Baloda Bazar district, Chhattisgarh, fell ill after inhaling toxic fumes from a nearby cement factory on January 22, 2025. The affected students reportedly experienced nausea, vomiting, and dizziness, with some even fainting due to the strong chemical odor in the air.

The NHRC has expressed concern over the incident, calling it a potential violation of human rights. In response, the Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Chhattisgarh, seeking a detailed report within four weeks. The report is expected to include updates on the health status of the children and the measures taken to address the environmental hazard.

According to a media report dated January 23, 2025, the cement plant in question uses Phosphorus Pentasulfide, a chemical employed to decompose waste and produce alternative fuel. Allegedly, the plant occasionally increases the quantity of this chemical to expedite the process, raising concerns about its impact on air quality and public health.

The incident has sparked fresh debate over industrial pollution and regulatory oversight in residential areas. Residents and environmental activists are now urging authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and enforce stricter environmental safety measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.
