CARI and Jadavpur University Collaborate on Ayurveda Research for Diabetes Management

In a significant move to advance Ayurveda-based diabetes research, the Central Ayurveda Research Institute (CARI), Kolkata, under the Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences (CCRAS), Ministry of Ayush, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the School of Natural Product Studies (SNPS), Jadavpur University, Kolkata. The collaboration marks the launch of a pioneering study titled 'Evaluation of Vidangadi Lauham, a Classical Ayurvedic Formulation in the Management of Diabetes in Experimental Animals.'

Scientific Exploration of Ayurvedic Medicine

This research initiative aims to establish a robust scientific foundation for the use of Vidangadi Lauham in diabetes management. By conducting biophysical characterization and analyzing the biological activity of medicinal plants, the study will contribute to preserving and validating India’s rich medicinal plant heritage. The findings are expected to facilitate the development of safe, high-quality Ayurvedic formulations for diabetes treatment, offering a natural alternative with minimal side effects.

Strengthening Ayurveda’s Global Credibility

The project also underscores the necessity of a comprehensive database to authenticate the health benefits of medicinal plants, ensuring their credibility in the global healthcare landscape. The ultimate goal is to promote Ayurvedic medicine as a scientifically validated and widely accepted healthcare approach worldwide. With diabetes becoming a growing global health concern, this research could pave the way for innovative Ayurvedic interventions that improve public health and quality of life.

MoU Signing and Key Stakeholders

The MoU signing ceremony was attended by officials from both institutions, including Dr. G. Babu, Director, CARI, Kolkata; Dr. Anupam Mangal, Assistant Director (Pharmacognosy); Dr. Lalrin Puia, Research Officer (Pharmacology); Dr. Sharad D. Pawar, Assistant Director (Pharmacology); and Dr. Rahul Singh, Research Officer (AEP). Representing SNPS, Jadavpur University, Prof. (Dr.) Pallab Kanti Halder, Director and Principal Investigator of the project, was also present.
