Sharda Care Healthcity Saves 4-Year-Old Girl from Limb Amputation After Severe, Neglected Injury
In a remarkable demonstration of medical expertise and compassionate care, Sharda Care Healthcity has successfully saved the foot of a 4-year-old girl who was at risk of amputation following a complex, neglected injury. The young patient, from a farming family in Madhya Pradesh, had suffered multiple bone fractures, extensive soft tissue crush injury, gangrene, and infection, which went untreated for nearly a month.
Initially seeking treatment elsewhere, the family faced challenges due to limited access and delays, resulting in the injury’s progression to a critical state. By the time she arrived at Sharda Care Healthcity, the child’s condition was dire, with local tissues at risk of irreversible damage and amputation considered the only option.
The hospital’s multidisciplinary team, led by Dr. Tanmoy Roy, Senior Consultant in Plastic Surgery, and Dr. Nishit Palo, Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Joint Replacement Surgeon, undertook a two-stage surgical approach to salvage the limb. The first procedure focused on internal fracture fixation, external stabilization using a metal fixator, and aggressive debridement to remove infected and necrotic tissue. Following surgery, the team provided intensive wound care and performed successful skin grafting to restore soft tissue coverage and facilitate healing.
Dr. Nishit Palo highlighted the complexity of the case: “The combination of multiple fractures, advanced gangrene, severe infection, and soft tissue crush injury made this an extremely rare and critical situation. Untreated gangrene can quickly lead to systemic infection, necessitating limb or even life-saving amputation. Our use of advanced fixation techniques and meticulous debridement was crucial in salvaging the foot. Such cases require not only surgical skill but coordinated multidisciplinary care to ensure both functional and aesthetic recovery.”
Adding to this, Dr. Tanmoy Roy explained, “Foot reconstruction in such severe cases demands layered repair — from infection control and tissue salvage to skin grafting. Gangrene is a race against time, as bacteria can rapidly spread. Our approach involved multiple dressings, soft tissue coverage, and eventual skin grafting to restore the limb’s integrity. We are committed to providing care irrespective of economic constraints, because saving a limb is preserving a future.”
Mr. Rishabh Gupta, Vice President of Sharda Care Healthcity, reflected on the case, stating, “This success story epitomizes our commitment to delivering timely, multidisciplinary care with compassion. Managing such a complex injury underscores our team’s expertise and our mission to serve every patient with excellence, regardless of their circumstances.”
The young patient is now recovering well, with the external metal support removed and full functionality expected in the near future. This case stands as a testament to the power of dedicated teamwork and a patient-first philosophy in overcoming even the most challenging medical obstacles.
