IMA East Delhi Branch Observes World No Tobacco Day with a Strong Call to Action

In a powerful demonstration of its ongoing commitment to public health, the Indian Medical Association – East Delhi Branch (IMA EDB) observed World No Tobacco Day 2025 with an impactful awareness event titled “Protect Our Future – Say NO to Tobacco!” at the IMA EDB Bhawan.

The event was led by IMA EDB President Dr. Shama Batra and saw the presence of several distinguished figures, including Dr. Ajay Lekhi, Dr. Neelam Lekhi, Dr. Radha Jain, Dr. Kumar Gandhi, and many past presidents and senior members.

Their participation underscored the importance of the message being delivered and lent strength to the association's efforts toward a tobacco-free society.

A key highlight of the program was the release of a bold, awareness-driven poster aimed at engaging both youth and adults in the fight against tobacco.

This was followed by a Continuing Medical Education (CME) session that featured in-depth discussions on the health impacts of tobacco consumption and the urgent need for preventative action.

Dr. Ankit Vishwani, a noted Head and Neck Onco Surgeon, delivered a compelling talk on the direct link between tobacco use and cancer.

His insights highlighted how tobacco, in its various forms, continues to contribute to an alarming rise in serious illnesses.

Supporting this message, Nodal Officer Dr. Ankit Jain led a session that shed light on the increasing prevalence of tobacco and vape use among children and adolescents. He emphasized the need for early education and intervention to prevent addiction and long-term harm.

Throughout the session, attendees were actively engaged, making it not only informative but also deeply impactful. The event also highlighted how tobacco use, including cigarettes, gutkha, pan masala, hookah, and vapes, severely damages the body—causing cancer, weakening immunity, and stunting growth, particularly in children.

Passive smoking was also recognized as a major concern, with experts warning that even indirect exposure can impair developing lungs and brains.

The gathering stressed the rising influence of flavored and tobacco-laced products that attract children and adolescents through peer pressure and social media, and called for proactive steps by families, educators, and healthcare providers.

A heartfelt message was conveyed to children to choose health over habit and reject tobacco in all its forms. Parents were urged to remain vigilant, set a positive example, and foster smoke-free environments at home.

As the event concluded, IMA East Delhi Branch reaffirmed its unwavering resolve to promote a healthier, tobacco-free future and called for collective action to protect the next generation from the harmful grip of tobacco.

Dr. Radha Jain, Immediate Past President of IMA EDB (2024–25), along with the entire team of IMA EDB, extended their gratitude to participants and reiterated their pledge to continue working tirelessly for a healthier society.
