Better Reporting Could Make Brain Stimulation Treatments More Reliable, Researchers Say
A simple change in how scientists report brain stimulation studies could help speed up the search for better treatments for depression, chronic pain and other difficult brain disorders, according to an international team of researchers.
The team, led by Orsolya Székely of the University of Bath and Dr Nicholas Holmes of the University of Birmingham, has developed the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Reporting Assessment Tool (TMS-RAT), the first standardised framework designed to improve how studies using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) are reported. Their work appears in the journal Brain Stimulation.
TMS is a non-invasive technique that uses brief magnetic pulses delivered through a coil placed against the scalp to stimulate targeted brain cells. It is already used to treat people with treatment-resistant depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), while researchers are exploring its potential in stroke rehabilitation, chronic pain and smoking cessation. Studies published in The Lancet Psychiatry and JAMA Psychiatry have shown its clinical value in selected patients, but experts say inconsistent reporting has made it difficult to compare results and identify which approaches work best.
The new tool aims to solve that problem by ensuring researchers consistently report essential details, including participants' age and sex, the type of TMS device used, stimulation strength, coil position and study procedures. Such information is crucial for reproducing findings and combining evidence from multiple studies into stronger analyses.
Explaining the need for the framework, Ms Székely said: “Within the area of brain stimulation, which is increasingly used in both research and clinical contexts, there are many contradictory findings. One barrier to understanding these contradictions is that researchers use a range of different protocols, but we are often unable to compare them properly because there is no shared standard for reporting the relevant experimental details.”
She added: “By making it easier to compare studies and combine evidence from different research groups, we hope this tool will help researchers to better build on each other’s findings and support progress in brain stimulation research.”
The project brought together researchers from 21 institutions and was completed without dedicated funding, largely through the efforts of early-career scientists. The freely available TMS-RAT also helps researchers prepare comprehensive methods sections, making future studies easier to assess and replicate.
Dr Holmes said the framework would strengthen meta-analyses—studies that combine results from many independent investigations—to produce more reliable evidence for clinical practice. As brain stimulation moves further into mainstream healthcare, researchers believe stronger reporting standards may prove just as important as the technology itself.
