The Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI) has strengthened its cancer treatment facilities by launching brachytherapy services, an advanced form of radiation therapy that delivers highly targeted treatment to cancer patients. The move is expected to improve access to modern cancer care and reduce the need for patients to seek treatment at other hospitals.

The institute successfully carried out its first brachytherapy procedure on June 9, 2026. After the successful clinical rollout, DSCI formally announced the launch of the service on Friday.

Brachytherapy is a specialised radiation treatment in which a radioactive source is placed inside or very close to the tumour. This allows doctors to deliver a high dose of radiation directly to the cancer while protecting nearby healthy tissues. The treatment is widely used for cervical cancer, endometrial cancer and several other selected cancers.

Calling the launch a major achievement, Dr. Savita Arora, Link Officer to the Director of DSCI, said the first successful brachytherapy procedure marks an important milestone for the institute. She said the new facility will help cancer patients receive safe, timely and comprehensive treatment under one roof, further strengthening DSCI's commitment to quality cancer care.

Dr. Pragya Shukla, Head of the Clinical Oncology Department, said brachytherapy is an essential part of modern radiation oncology. She added that with the service now available again at DSCI, many patients will be able to receive precise, evidence-based treatment without being referred to other centres.

The brachytherapy unit will be managed by a multidisciplinary team of experienced radiation oncologists, medical physicists, radiation technologists, anaesthesiologists, nurses and other healthcare professionals to ensure high standards of patient safety and quality care.

The institute has also been expanding its healthcare services in recent weeks. It started Dental OPD services on June 23 and made a second operation theatre operational on June 18. According to DSCI, these additions will enable patients to access a wider range of essential healthcare services within the institute itself.
