Tele-Health Saves Life: Rapid Remote Heart Care Helps 62-Year-Old Survive Massive Heart Attack
A 62-year-old site supervisor survived a massive heart attack after doctors at Sri City Medical Center acted quickly with the support of Apollo TeleHealth's emergency specialists. The case highlights how technology and real-time expert guidance can make the difference between life and death, especially in areas where advanced cardiac care is not immediately available.
The medical emergency unfolded on June 1 when the man developed chest pain and excessive sweating while working at Sri City. Believing it to be gastric discomfort, he ignored the symptoms and continued working. His condition, however, worsened rapidly, and he suddenly collapsed after losing consciousness. His colleagues immediately rushed him to the Apollo-operated emergency facility at Sri City Medical Center.
Doctors at the centre quickly assessed the patient and performed a 12-lead ECG, which confirmed an acute Inferior Wall ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI), a severe form of heart attack. The condition was further complicated by a high-degree heart block and cardiogenic shock, both of which can be fatal if treatment is delayed.
Realising the seriousness of the situation, the on-site medical team instantly connected with Apollo Hospitals' emergency specialists through a telemedicine platform. The specialists reviewed the ECG in real time, guided the doctors on immediate treatment, and helped establish the diagnosis within the crucial "golden hour" — the period when prompt treatment offers the best chance of survival.
Following consent from the patient's family, doctors administered emergency clot-busting therapy under the remote guidance of Apollo's specialists. The patient's chest pain reduced, his blood pressure and heart rate improved, and his condition gradually stabilised. He was later shifted to a tertiary care hospital in Chennai for advanced cardiac treatment.
Dr. Ravindra Sannareddy, Managing Director of Sri City, praised the medical team for their swift response. He said the seamless coordination between the frontline doctors and Apollo TeleHealth specialists turned a life-threatening emergency into a successful recovery, demonstrating how technology-enabled healthcare can save lives.
Dr. Vikram Thaploo, CEO of Apollo TeleHealth, said that every minute counts during a heart attack and that specialist care should not be limited by geographical boundaries. He added that combining local medical teams with real-time expert support allows faster diagnosis, quicker treatment decisions, and better outcomes even in remote or semi-urban locations.
The successful intervention highlights the growing role of connected healthcare in strengthening emergency medical services. It also reinforces Apollo TeleHealth's efforts to bridge healthcare gaps by bringing specialist expertise to the bedside through technology, ensuring that critically ill patients receive timely, life-saving care regardless of location.
