Government to sell new diabetic medicines at Janaushadhi Kendras

In a bid to make a newly approved generic version of the diabetes medicine Sitagliptin accessible to a wider population, the Union Government has launched the medicine under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana.

The drug, which was launched by the Chief Executive Officer of Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Bureau of India Ravi Dadhich in New Delhi, will be available priced at between rupees six and ten respectively for 50 and 100 mg tablets.

While the combination of Sitagliptin and Metformin tablets 50mg/500mg strength will cost Rs 65/- for a strip of 10 tablets, the price of 50mg/1000mg combination is kept at Rs 70/-, the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers stated on September 16, 2022.

Sitagliptin is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

All these variants are available at 60% to 70% lesser prices than branded variants as they are available in the price band of Rs. 162/- to Rs. 258/- at other medical stores, the statement added.

The drug will be made available at more than 8700 Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras across the country run under the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana, the ministry said.
