Ampicillin with Sulbactam sodium

Ampicillin with Sulbactam Sodium is a combination antibiotic that includes Ampicillin, a broad-spectrum penicillin, and Sulbactam Sodium, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. This combination is designed to enhance the antibacterial activity of ampicillin by preventing the degradation of the antibiotic by beta-lactamase enzymes produced by some bacteria.

Indications

-Bacterial Infections: Effective against a variety of bacterial infections, including respiratory tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, intra-abdominal infections, and urinary tract infections. -Pre, intra and post operative use for the prevention and treatment of surgical infections, Surgical prophylaxis, Intra-abdominal infections, Post-surgical infections, suture infections, Obstetrics and gynaecological infections, Bone and joint infections, Respiratory tract infections, Gonorrhoea, Skin & soft tissue infections, Infections in immunocompromised patients

Dosage

-Dosage is determined based on the specific infection, patient factors, and susceptibility of the causative bacteria. The combination is typically administered intravenously. -I.V. slow injection over or atleast 10-15 mins, or in greater dilutions with 50-100 ml of a compatible diluent as an intravenous infusion over 15-30 mins. It can also be administered by deep intra muscular injection. 1.5 gm [0.5 gm Sulbactam (as sod), 1 gm Ampicillin (as sod) to 3 gm (1 gm Sulbactam (as sod), 2 gm Ampicillin (as sod)] every 6 hrs. Max 4 gm per day.

Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity: Avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to ampicillin, sulbactam, or other beta-lactam antibiotics. -History of Severe Allergic Reactions: Caution in patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics.

Special Precautions

-Renal Impairment: Adjustments in dosage may be necessary in patients with renal dysfunction. -Gastrointestinal Disorders: Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal diseases, particularly colitis. Pregnancy, Nursing mother, not in infants and children under age of 12 , concurrent use with allopurinol.

Side Effects

-Common side effects may include diarrhea, rash, and injection site reactions. Serious side effects are rare but may include allergic reactions, superinfections, and changes in blood clotting parameters. -Diarrhoea, rash, Gastritis, stomatitis, black hairy tongue, enterocolitis, pseudomembranous colitis, nausea, vomiting, urticaria, erythema multiforme, agranulocytosis.

Drug Interactions

-Probenecid: May increase and prolong the therapeutic levels of ampicillin. -Aminoglycosides: Enhanced antibacterial effect when used concomitantly. -Drug interactions may change how your medications work or increase your risk for serious side effects. Keep a list of all the products you use and share it with your doctor and pharmacist.
