ANTACID

An Antacid is a basic substance which neutralises gastric acid and raises the pH of gastric contents without reducing acid production. The potency of antacids is expressed in terms of their acid-neutralising capacity (ANC). It is commercially available as chewable tablets, tablets and liquids.

Indications

-Heartburn -Indigestion -Acid reflux -Gastric discomfort


Dosage

Typically, adults take 1-2 tablets or 5-10 mL of liquid antacid, as needed, usually after meals and before bedtime. Follow the specific dosage instructions on the product label or as advised by a healthcare provider.


Contra-Indications

-Severe renal impairment -Hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients -Patients with metabolic alkalosis


Special Precautions

Consult a physician before using it during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Patients over the age of 60 years, alcohol addicts or those with a history of stomach ulcers should consult a healthcare professional before using it.


Side Effects

-Constipation -Diarrhea -Stomach cramps -Nausea


Drug Interactions

-May interfere with the absorption of certain medications such as antibiotics and iron supplements. -Consult a healthcare provider before combining with other medications.
