Brimonidine Tartrate

brimonidine tartrate is an alpha adrenergic receptor agonist with high degree of selectivity to alpha2 receptors. It has a peak ocular hypotensive effect occurring at two hours post-dosing.

Indications

brimonidine tartrate is indicated for lowering intraocular pressure in patients with open angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.

Dosage

One drop in the affected eye(s).

Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity , (MAO) inhibitor therapy.

Special Precautions

Severe cardiovascular disease.Hepatic and renal impairment, depression, cerebral and coronary insufficiency, Raynaud’s phenomenon, orthostatic hypotension or thromboangitis obliterans. Pregnancy: brimonidine tartrate should be used cautioushs during pregnancy. Nursing Mothers : It is not known whether brimonidine tartrate is excreted in human milk, although in animal studies, brimonidine tartrate has been shown to be excreted in breast milk. Side Effects

Oral dryness, ocular hyperemia, burning and stinging, headache, blurring, foreign bodies sensation, fatigue/drowsiness, conjunctival follicles, ocular allergic reactions and ocular pruritis.

Drug Interactions

Beta blockers (ophthalmic and systemic), antihypertensives and/or cardiac glycosides, tricyclic anti depressants.
