Buspirone
Anxiolytic agent.The drug does not act on benzodiazepine receptors.It enhances the activity of specific noradrenergic& dopaminergic pathways & reduces activity of serotonin & acetylcholine.Short term management of anxiety disorders and the relief of symptoms of anxiety with or without accompanying depression.
Initial 5 mg 2-3 times daily, dose may be increased every 2-3 days. Maint 15 mg-30 mg daily. Max 45 mg daily.
Hypersensitivity, epilepsy, severe renal & hepatic disease, pregnancy & lactation.
History of renal or hepatic impairment, alcoholics.
Dizziness, headache, nervousness, light headedness, excitment and nausea. Rarely tachycardia, palpitations, chest pain, drowsiness, confusion, dry mouth, fatigue, sweating.
Elevation of blood pressure in combination with MAO inhibitors. Elevates blood Digoxine levels. Avoid alcohol. Caution with other CNS active agents. Elevated BP if used with MAOI. Increases serum haloperidol. May increase digoxin toxicity.
