Chlordiazepoxide
It is first benzodiazepines to be used clinically. It is slowly absorbed, produces a smooth long lasting effect; preferred in chronic anxiety states but has poor anticonvulsant action.Anxiety, tension. Behavioural disorders. Insomnia, emotional disturbances. Pre & post operative apprehensions.
10 mg 2-4 times daily. Children 10 mg daily or as required. Elderly 10 mg daily.
Hypersensitivity to benzo-diazepines, jaundice, acute narrow angle glaucoma.
Pregnancy, lactation, alcoholics, hepatic or renal impairment. Paediatrics:Contraindicated below the age of6 years. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Contraindicated. Elderly: Reduced dose may be necessary.
Drug dependence & abuse, drowsiness, dizziness, impaired liver function & blood counts.
Alcohol potentiates chlordiazepoxide. Cimetidine increases half-life. Absorption is impaired by magnesium trisilicate, norphine, pethidine and atropine. Absorption enhanced by metoclopramide & Aluminium hydroxide.
