Glipizide with Metformin

Glipizide with Metformin

Glipizide with Metformin is a combination medication used to treat type 2 diabetes mellitus. It contains glipizide, a sulfonylurea that helps lower blood sugar levels by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas, and metformin, a biguanide that improves insulin sensitivity and reduces glucose production in the liver.

Indications

Management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in adults.

Dosage

Dosage should be individualized based on patient response and tolerance. Typically, starting doses may vary depending on prior antidiabetic therapy.

Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to glipizide, metformin, or any component of the formulation. Severe renal impairment (eGFR < 30 mL/min/1.73 m²), metabolic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis.

Special Precautions

Monitor renal function regularly. Discontinue use before iodinated contrast imaging procedures. Caution in elderly patients and those at risk of hypoglycemia.

Side Effects

Common side effects may include hypoglycemia (especially in combination with other antidiabetic agents), gastrointestinal upset (nausea, diarrhea), headache, dizziness.

Drug Interactions

Potential interactions with other medications, including NSAIDs, certain antibiotics, and drugs affecting renal function or metabolism.
