N-Acetylcysteine

N-Acetylcysteine

It is a commonly used as a mucolytic drug, and at higher doses it increases the cellular levels of reduced glutathione, an antioxidant, which influence insulin receptor activity. The NAC may exert the same effects at the ovarian level and thus can help in inducing ovulation. Its efficacy for ovulation is increased when it is combined with clomiphene and folic acid.

Indications

Polycystic ovary syndrome and clomiphene-resistant infertility.


Dosage

Oral, 1.6-3g/day, in three divided doses.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity.


Special Precautions

Asthmatics, peptic ulcer, lactation, pregnancy.


Side Effects

Stomatitis, nausea, vomiting, rhinorrhoea, drowsiness, chest tightness, bronchoconstriction


Drug Interactions

Nitroglycerine, Activated Charcol.
