It is poorly absorbed from the G.I.T.Orally used for bacterial diarrhoeas and dysentery. Preparation of bowel before surgery. Hepatic coma.
0.25-1 gm four times
Hypersensitivity to aminogly-cosides, renal impairment
Prolonged use can induce malabsorption syndrome with diarrhoea and steatorrhoea. It decreases absorption of digoxin, bile acid reabsorption and lowers plasma cholesterol levels. Paediatrics: Use with caution. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Contraindicated. Elderly: Use with caution.
Ototoxicity and nephrotoxicity.
Potentiates nephrotoxicity produced by other aminoglycosides, neuromuscular blocking action of tubocurarine and pancuronium. Potentiates ototoxic effect of loop diuretics. Interferes with absorption of digoxin, phenoxymet-hylpenicilline, Vit. B12, Methotrexate, 5-flurouracil and spironolactone. Cholesterol lowering effect enhanced by cholestyramine, clofibrate & d-thyroxine.
