PIRFENIDONE

It is TNF and interleukin inhibitor known to reduce accumulation of inflammatory cells.

Indications

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.


Dosage

Oral, 200-1800mg thrice a day.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity, concomitant use of fluvoxamine, Severe hepatic or renal impairment.


Special Precautions

Take after meals to reduce side effects. Avoid smoking. Pregnancy: not advised to use in pregnancy, Lactation: not known if it is excreted in milk. Children: safety not established. Elderly: use with caution.


Side Effects

Dizziness, Fatigue, anorexia, weight loss, elevation of liver enzymes, photosensitivity and skin rash.


Drug Interactions

Fluvoxamine, amiodarone, fluconazole, chloramphenicol, fluoxetine, paroxetine, ciprofloxacin. Grape fruit juice should be aboided during therapy as it affects CCYP1A2 enzyme.
