Trioxsalen

It belongs to psoralens groups. It increases the skin's sensitivity to sunlight or ultravoilet light.

Indications

Specially used to treat vitiligo, suntanning, psoriasis (may be used).


Dosage

Administered orally with meals or milk. Vitiligo : Adult and children 12 years of age or over 20-40mg 2 to 4 hours before ultravoilet light A (UVA) exposure. Suntanning : Adult and children 12 years or over : 20-40mg 2 hours before UVA exposure.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to Trioxsalen and ingredients, allergic to sunlight, lupus erythematosus, porphyria, eye problems-cataract, cardiovascular disease, stomach problem, melanoma or other skin cancer, recent treatment with x-rays or cancer medicines.


Special Precautions

Periodic ophthalmic examinatin should be done. Before each treatment cover skin for at least 24 hours and after each treatment cover skin for atleast 8 hours by wearing protective clothing. Protect lips and uncovered part of the body with sunblock medications. Sunblock products should not be used on the areas of skin that are to be treated. Use wraparound sunglasses. Pregnancy : Studies goingon. Lactation : Not cause any problem to nursing babies. Paediatrics : Reduced dose necessary (below 12 years of age). Elderly: Use with caution.


Side Effects

Dry or itchy skin, blistering and peeling of skin, reddened and sore skin, risk of skin cancer, premature aging of skin, swelling especially of feet or lower legs, nausea, dizziness, headache, mental depression, nervousness, sleeplessness.


Drug Interactions

Avoid eating limes, figs, parsley, parsnips, mustard, carrots and celery.
