Zolpidem

Zolpidem

It is a non-benzodiazepine sedative drug belonging to the imidazopyridine class. It preferentially binds to omega-1 receptors. The selective binding may explain the relative absence of myelorelaxant and anti-convulsant effects of zolpidem.

Indications

Short term treatment of insomnia.


Dosage

Adult : 10mg before bedtime. Dosage may be altered when patients are on drugs known to have central nervous system depressant effect. Elderly/deblitated patients: Initial 5mg. Max: 10mg daily.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to zollidem. Obstructive sleep apnea, Myasthenia gravis, Severe heaptic insufficiency, Acute pulmonary insufficiency and Respiratory depression.


Special Precautions

Neonates, children, nursing mothers, pregnancy. Normal dosage to be altered in patients with hepatic insufficiency. Caution in patients exhiniting symptoms of depression. Patients should be warned from doing any jobs involving mental alertness or motor coordination after ingestion the drug.


Side Effects

Amnesia, drowsiness, back pain, chest pain, headache, malaise, pulmonary embolism, confusion, urinary tract infection, dry mouth, diplopia.


Drug Interactions

Zolpidem with alcohol presents with enhanced sedative action. Others: Rifampicin, singnificantly reduces the plasma concentration and effects of zolpidem.
