Alprostadil

Alprostadil is used to treat erectile dysfunction and to help diagnose certain causes of this disorder. Alprostadil is also used to improve blood flow in newborn babies with heart problems.

Indications

Maintenance of patency of ductus arteriosus in neonates with congenital heart disease.

Dosage

Child : 0.05-0.1mcg/kg/min by continuous IV infusion into a large vein, or alternatively through an umbilical artery catheter placed at the ductal opening. Reduce to the lowest dose necessary to maintain response as soon as possible.

Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to ingredients, hyaline membrane disease. Pregnancy.

Special Precautions

Patient w/ bleeding tendencies, blood-borne and pulmonary diseases, transient ischaemic attacks, CHD, CHF, history of psychiatric disorder or addiction. Pregnancy. Patient Counselling This drug may cause dizziness, syncope, and hypotension, if affected, do not drive or operate machinery.

Side Effects

Bleeding and pain at the injection site (short-term), painful erection

Drug Interactions

Taking this medicine will not prevent you from passing a disease such as hepatitis or HIV to other people. Do not have unprotected sex or share razors or toothbrushes. Talk with your doctor about safe ways to prevent HIV transmission during sex. Sharing drug or medicine needles is never safe, even for a healthy person.
