AMITRIPTYLINE HYDROCHLORIDE

Amitriptyline Hydrochloride is a tricyclic antidepressant primarily used to treat depression and anxiety. It works by increasing the levels of certain natural chemicals in the brain, helping to improve mood and feelings of well-being.

Indications

-Major depressive disorder -Anxiety disorders -Chronic pain management -Migraine prophylaxis -Insomnia


Dosage

-Adults: Typically, 25-75 mg per day, gradually increased as needed. Maximum dose is 150-200 mg per day. -Elderly and adolescents: Usually start at a lower dose, around 10-25 mg per day, increased as needed. Maximum dose is 100-150 mg per day. -Dosage should be individualized based on patient response and tolerability.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to amitriptyline or any of its components -Recent myocardial infarction -Concurrent use with MAO inhibitors -Acute recovery phase following a heart attack


Special Precautions

-Monitor for worsening depression or suicidal thoughts, especially at the beginning of treatment or during dose adjustments. -Caution in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease, glaucoma, urinary retention, or thyroid disorder. -May cause drowsiness; avoid operating heavy machinery or driving. -Alcohol can increase the sedative effect. -Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider.


Side Effects

-Common: Dry mouth, drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, blurred vision, weight gain. -Serious: Seizures, irregular heartbeat, severe dizziness, fainting, mental/mood changes (e.g., confusion, hallucinations), trouble urinating.


Drug Interactions

-MAO inhibitors (should not be taken within 14 days of each other) -Anticholinergic drugs (may increase side effects) -Blood thinners (e.g., warfarin) -Other antidepressants (e.g., SSRIs) -Certain antihistamines, antipsychotics, and medications for Parkinson's disease
