AZITHROMYCIN DIHYDRATE

Azithromycin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that belongs to the macrolide antibiotic group and is used to treat various bacterial infections. Macrolides are antibiotics that target bacterial ribosomes to inhibit protein synthesis. It is also a potent anti-tubercular drug. It was initially discovered in 1980 by the Pliva Pharmaceutical company. Azithromycin has three forms: anhydrous form, monohydrate and dihydrate form.

Indications

Bronchitis, pneumonia, tuberculosis (TB), sexually transmitted diseases (STD), and other infections that affect the ear, throat, sinuses, skin and reproductive organs.

Dosage

The average tablet dose is 250-500mg once or twice a day. The recommended dose of oral suspension is 100-200/5ml.

Contra-Indications

Hepatic impairment, hypersensitivity to azithromycin.

Special Precautions

Consult a Physician before using it during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Side Effects

Fatigue, nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, vertigo, palpitation, and inflammation of the pancreas.

Drug Interactions

Colchicine, pimozide, digoxin, antacids.
