Bacitracin

Bacitracin is an antibiotic that is used topically to prevent infections in minor cuts, burns, and abrasions. It works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.

Indications

-Treatment of superficial infections of the skin -Prevention of infection in minor wounds -Prophylaxis in certain surgical procedures


Dosage

-For topical use: Apply a small amount to the affected area 1-3 times daily as directed by a healthcare provider. -Pediatric dosage: Typically the same as adults, but should be confirmed with a healthcare provider.


Contra-Indications

-Known hypersensitivity to Bacitracin or any of its components -Not recommended for use in deep or puncture wounds, animal bites, or serious burns


Special Precautions

-Avoid application to large areas of the body or on broken skin -Use with caution in individuals with a history of allergic reactions to antibiotics -Discontinue use if irritation or allergic reaction occurs


Side Effects

-Local irritation or rash at the application site -Rarely, allergic reactions such as itching, redness, or swelling -Contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals


Drug Interactions

-Bacitracin is generally not known to interact with other drugs when used topically -Avoid using with other topical antibiotics to prevent potential interaction
