Barbitone

Barbitone, also known as barbital, is a barbiturate derivative used primarily as a sedative and hypnotic. It works by depressing the central nervous system, which helps induce sleep and relieve anxiety.

Indications

-Insomnia -Anxiety disorders -Preoperative sedation -Seizure control


Dosage

-Adults: 100-200 mg orally at bedtime for insomnia; 50-100 mg orally 1-3 times daily for anxiety. -Children: Dosage must be individualized by a healthcare professional based on age, weight, and clinical condition.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to barbiturates -Severe respiratory insufficiency -Porphyria -Severe hepatic impairment -Pregnancy and lactation


Special Precautions

-Monitor for signs of dependence and abuse. -Use with caution in elderly patients and those with renal impairment. -Avoid abrupt discontinuation to prevent withdrawal symptoms. -Caution in patients with a history of depression or suicidal tendencies.

Drug Interactions

-Alcohol and other CNS depressants: Enhanced sedative effects. -Anticoagulants: Reduced effectiveness. -Corticosteroids: Altered metabolism. -Oral contraceptives: Reduced effectiveness. -MAO inhibitors: Enhanced sedative effects.
