-Becaplermin is a recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) that is used in wound care. It plays a crucial role in the stimulation of cellular proliferation and tissue regeneration, promoting the healing of chronic, non-healing wounds. -Becaplermin is a, recombinant human platelet-derived growth factor for topical administration, produced by recombinant DNA technology.

Indications

-Becaplermin is indicated for the treatment of diabetic neuropathic ulcers on the lower extremities in conjunction with standard wound care measures. It is specifically recommended for patients with full-thickness ulcers that extend into the subcutaneous tissue or beyond and have not shown significant improvement with conventional therapies. -Lower extremity diabetic neuropathic ulcers that extend into the subcutaneous tissue or beyond and have an adequate blood supply.


Dosage

-The recommended dosage of Becaplermin is generally determined by the size of the ulcer. It is typically applied once daily as a topical gel. The healthcare provider will assess the wound size and prescribe the appropriate amount of gel for application. -Topical; 0.01% to the affected area in thin layer and covering with saline moistened dressing.


Contra-Indications

-Becaplermin is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the product or any of its components. Additionally, it is not recommended for use in malignancies, as PDGF has the potential to stimulate the growth of neoplastic cells. -Malignancy of the site.


Special Precautions

-Becaplermin should be used with caution in patients with a history of cancer or pre-existing neoplastic conditions. -The safety and efficacy of long-term use beyond 3 months have not been established. -The potential for systemic exposure increases with larger wound sizes, and caution should be exercised in such cases. Safety and efficacy in pediatric patients less than 16 years have not been established. Pregnancy: Data not sufficient. Lactation: Data not sufficient. Elderly: No overall differences in safety or effectiveness have been observed between elderly and other adult patients.


Side Effects

-Common side effects of Becaplermin may include erythema, burning, pain, pruritus, and local irritation at the application site. Hypersensitivity reactions are rare but can occur. -Erythrematous rash.


Drug Interactions

No significant drug interactions have been reported with Becaplermin. However, caution should be exercised when used concomitantly with other topical agents, as interactions may occur.
