Bentonite

Bentonite is used in various pharmaceutical preparations like creams, ointments, lotions, etc. It possesses cleansing and soothing properties and is used to treat various skin infractions and allergies. It has anti parasitic, and anti-bacterial properties and acts as a detoxifying agent. It also improves gut flora and is used to treat gastrointestinal diseases.

Indications

Rashes, eczema, psoriasis, minor burns, wounds, gum diseases, bad breath, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, constipation, food poisoning and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).


Dosage

The average dose of Bentonite for infants ( 3 to 12 months ) is 1 to 1.5 grams, and the dose for children ( above 1 year) is 1 to 3 grams. The recommended dose for adults is 2 to 5 grams with 6 to 8 ounces ( 177 to 236 ml ) of water. It is suggested to take bentonite clay 2 hours before and after any medication.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity.


Special Precautions

It is recommended to consult a physician before taking bentonite during pregnancy and breastfeeding.


Side Effects

Allergic reactions like rashes, inflammation, dryness, dehydration, vomiting, and abdominal discomfort.


Drug Interactions

H2 medications like cimetidine, and quinine.
