Benzhexol

Benzhexol, also known as trihexyphenidyl, is an anticholinergic medication used to treat Parkinson's disease and other movement disorders. It helps to control tremors and muscle stiffness associated with these conditions.

Indications

-Parkinson's disease -Drug-induced extrapyramidal symptoms (e.g., from antipsychotic medications) -Other movement disorders

Dosage

-Initial Dose: 1 mg to 2 mg orally 3 times a day. -Maintenance Dose: May be adjusted up to 6-10 mg daily, depending on the response and tolerability. -Maximum Dose: Generally up to 12 mg daily.

Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to benzhexol or any of its components -Narrow-angle glaucoma -Myasthenia gravis -Severe gastrointestinal conditions -Prostatic hypertrophy with urinary obstruction

Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of epilepsy or seizures. -Monitor for signs of anticholinergic toxicity, such as dry mouth, constipation, and blurred vision. -Caution in elderly patients due to increased sensitivity to side effects. -Avoid abrupt discontinuation as it may cause a sudden worsening of symptoms.

Side Effects

-Dry mouth -Constipation -Blurred vision -Dizziness -Nausea and vomiting -Confusion or hallucinations (especially in elderly patients)

Drug Interactions

-May interact with other anticholinergic drugs, leading to additive effects. -Potentiates the effects of other central nervous system depressants. -May reduce the efficacy of other Parkinson's disease medications. -Caution with medications that affect gastrointestinal motility.
