Benzocaine

Benzocaine is used as a potent local or surface anaesthetic that works by inhibiting the transmission of nerve impulses along nerve branches and nerve endings. It is used to relieve pain and is available in solution, spray, liquid, cream, and ointment preparation.

Indications

Pain, toothache, denture irritation, sore throat, blisters, burns, sore gums, canker sores, insect bites, and minor cuts.


Dosage

The average dose for benzocaine injectable solution is 10 mg/ml; for oral solution, it is 8–10 mg/ml; and for benzocaine tablets, it is 20–80 mg.


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity reactions, asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, and other chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD).


Special Precautions

It is suggested to consult a physician before using benzocaine during pregnancy and breastfeeding.


Side Effects

Allergic reactions like rash, itching, inflammation, palpitation, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, headache, fatigue, and difficulty in breathing.


Drug Interactions

Alcohol, sulfonamide drugs like sulfisoxazole and sulfamethoxazole, alcohol, and some dietary supplements.
