Bromhexine, Ammonium Chloride, Dextromethorphan, Menthol

This medication is a combination of bromhexine, ammonium chloride, dextromethorphan, and menthol. Bromhexine is an expectorant that helps loosen mucus and make coughs more productive. Ammonium chloride helps to maintain the pH of the respiratory secretions, aiding in the expectoration process. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that acts on the cough center in the brain, reducing the urge to cough. Menthol provides a cooling sensation and may help to soothe the throat.

Indications

This medication is indicated for the relief of cough associated with respiratory tract infections and conditions such as bronchitis, sinusitis, and the common cold.


Dosage

-Adults and children over 12 years: 10ml every 4 to 6 hours, not to exceed 6 doses in 24 hours. -Children 6 to 12 years: 5ml every 4 to 6 hours, not to exceed 4 doses in 24 hours. -Not recommended for children under 6 years of age without medical advice.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to any component of the medication. -Patients with severe liver or kidney impairment. -Concomitant use with monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) or within 14 days of discontinuing MAOI therapy.


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of respiratory depression, asthma, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). -Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication as it may enhance the sedative effects of dextromethorphan. -Use with caution in elderly patients and those with hepatic or renal impairment.


Side Effects

Common side effects may include drowsiness, dizziness, gastrointestinal upset (such as nausea or vomiting), and allergic reactions (rash, itching, swelling). Rare but serious side effects may include respiratory depression or paradoxical bronchospasm.


Drug Interactions

-Concomitant use with other medications that cause central nervous system depression (such as opioids, benzodiazepines, or sedating antihistamines) may increase the risk of respiratory depression and sedation. -Avoid concomitant use with MAOIs or serotonergic medications to reduce the risk of serotonin syndrome.
