Calcium chloride
Calcium chloride is a salt used to increase calcium levels in the body. It is commonly administered intravenously in medical settings for conditions such as hypocalcemia (low calcium levels), and it also serves as an electrolyte replenisher.-Treatment of hypocalcemia (low blood calcium levels) -Management of acute hyperkalemia (high potassium levels) -Prevention and treatment of calcium deficiency -Adjunct in the treatment of certain cardiac conditions
-Adults: Typically, 500 mg to 1 g of calcium chloride may be administered intravenously over a period of time, depending on the condition being treated. -Pediatrics: Dosage should be adjusted according to body weight and specific medical needs, typically starting at 0.1 to 0.2 mL/kg of a 10% solution.
-Hypercalcemia (excessive calcium levels) -Kidney stones or renal impairment -Patients with a history of hypersensitivity to calcium chloride
-Use with caution in patients with renal impairment or heart disease. -Monitor calcium levels regularly during treatment. -Administer slowly to prevent vein irritation or damage.
-Local irritation or necrosis at the injection site -Flushing -Nausea or vomiting -Dizziness -Hypercalcemia
-May interact with other calcium-containing supplements or medications, leading to excessive calcium levels. -Caution when used with digoxin, as high calcium levels can enhance the effects of digoxin and lead to toxicity.
