Canagliflozin

Canagliflozin is an oral medication used to help control blood sugar levels in adults with type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs known as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. Canagliflozin works by helping the kidneys remove excess glucose from the bloodstream through urine. This mechanism helps lower blood sugar levels and can also contribute to weight loss. It belongs to gliflozin class or subtype 2 sodium-glucose transport (SGLT-2) inhibitors class.

Indications

-Treatment of type 2 diabetes in conjunction with diet and exercise. -May be used as a monotherapy or in combination with other diabetes medications. -Canagliflozin has also been studied for its potential cardiovascular and renal benefits.


Dosage

-The typical starting dose for canagliflozin is 100 mg once daily. -Dosage can be adjusted up to 300 mg once daily based on individual response and tolerability. -It is recommended to take canagliflozin in the morning before the first meal. -Dosing may need to be adjusted for individuals with renal impairment.


Contra-Indications

Anaphylaxis, end stage renal disease.


Special Precautions

-Paediatric: Data not sufficient. -Pregnancy: Not recommended in 2nd and 3rd trimester. -Lactation: Data not sufficient. -Elderly: Use with caution, Renal function to be monitored.


Side Effects

urinary tract infections, increased urination, Hypotension, Ketoacidosis, Hyperkalemiayeast infections, vaginal itching, thirst, constipation, nausea, fatigue, weakness, skin sensitivity to sunlight, hypersensitivity reactions (including skin redness, rash, itching, hives, and swelling), bone fractures, Increases in Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL-C) and Acute kidney injury.


Drug Interactions

-May interact with other medications that affect kidney function or diuretic use. -Canagliflozin may have interactions with other diabetes medications, requiring dosage adjustments. -Interactions with medications that can affect blood pressure may lead to increased hypotensive effects.
