Carbenicillin

Carbenicillin

It is active against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and indole positive Proteus which are not inhibited by antibiotics other than gentamicin and polymyxin B. It is neither penicillinase resistant nor acid resistant.

Indications

Septicaemia. Urinary and respiratory tract infections, infected burns. Generalized systemic infections. Endocarditis, meningitis, Post-operative infections.


Dosage

Adults: 1-2 gm i.m. or 1-5 gm i.v. every 4-6 hours. Children: 50-400 mg/kg bodywt daily in divided doses.


Contra-Indications

Penicillin allergy.


Special Precautions

Possible superinfection, bleeding disorders, Monitor electrolyte, haematopoietic and cardiac status. Adjust dose in renal impairment. Paediatrics: Safety not clearly established. Pregnancy: Safety not clearly established. Lactation: Use with caution. Elderly: Safe.


Side Effects

G.I. disturbances


Drug Interactions

Hypokalaemia if digitalis is administered concomitantly. Effective combination in high doses with aminoglycosides. Probenecid prolongs half-life of carbenicillin.
