CARIPRAZINE

Cariprazine is an atypical antipsychotic used primarily to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. It works by modulating the effects of neurotransmitters in the brain, particularly dopamine and serotonin.

Indications

-Schizophrenia -Bipolar I disorder (manic or mixed episodes)


Dosage

-Schizophrenia: Typically starts at 1.5 mg once daily, with a usual range of 1.5 mg to 6 mg daily. -Bipolar I Disorder: Typically starts at 3 mg once daily, with a usual range of 3 mg to 6 mg daily.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to cariprazine or any of its components -Severe liver impairment -Concomitant use of strong CYP3A4 inhibitors or inducers


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures or conditions that predispose to seizures. -Monitor for signs of neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), tardive dyskinesia, and metabolic changes. -Regular monitoring of weight, blood glucose, and lipid levels is recommended.


Side Effects

-Common: Weight gain, insomnia, dizziness, and gastrointestinal symptoms. -Serious: Extrapyramidal symptoms (e.g., tremors, rigidity), metabolic syndrome, neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS), and suicidal thoughts.
