Cefditoren

The antibiotic belongs to third generation cephalosporin. It is used to treat bacterial infections (gram positive and gram negative).

Indications

Acute bacterial exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, community-acquired pneumonia, pharyngitis/tonsillitis, and uncomplicated skin and skin-structure infection.


Dosage

Oral; 200mg - 400mg OD/BD 10-14days


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity to Cefditoren, other cephalosporins and penicillin; or milk proteins. Carnitine deficiency.


Special Precautions

It use over a time can cause carnitine deficiency, chance increases in renal impairment or decreased muscle mass. Prolonged use increase chance of superinfection including clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea and pseudomembranous colitis. Pregnancy and lactation


Side Effects

Nausea, Headache, Abdominal pain, Vaginal monilasis, dyspepsia, Vomiting, Haematuria, increased urine white blood cells, decreased haematocrit, incareased glucose, interstitial pneumonia acute eosinophilic pneumonia, acute renal failure, arthralgia, thrombocytopenia, erythema multiforme.


Drug Interactions

Antacids/H-2 receptor blocker may reduce the serum concentration of cefditoren. probenecid may increase plasma concentration and prolong half -life of cefditoren. Potentiate the effect of warfarin.
