Cefepime Hydrochloride

Cefepime Hydrochloride is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic used for treating a variety of bacterial infections. It is effective against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, making it useful in the treatment of infections such as pneumonia, urinary tract infections, skin infections, and intra-abdominal infections.

Indications

-Pneumonia -Urinary tract infections -Skin and soft tissue infections -Intra-abdominal infections -Febrile neutropenia


Dosage

-Adults: Typically, 1-2 grams administered intravenously or intramuscularly every 8-12 hours, depending on the severity of the infection and the patient's renal function. -Pediatric Patients: Dosage is adjusted based on body weight and infection type; generally, 50-100 mg/kg/day in divided doses every 8-12 hours.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to Cefepime or other cephalosporins -Severe allergic reactions to penicillins or cephalosporins -Renal impairment without dosage adjustment


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with renal impairment; dosage adjustments may be necessary. -Monitor for signs of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. -Exercise caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease or colitis. -Potential cross-reactivity with penicillin allergies.


Side Effects

-Common: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rash -Serious: Allergic reactions (e.g., anaphylaxis), seizures, renal impairment, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea


Drug Interactions

-May enhance the nephrotoxicity of other nephrotoxic drugs such as aminoglycosides. -Probenecid can increase cefepime levels by decreasing renal excretion. -Use with caution with anticoagulants; may affect bleeding risk.
