Cefpodoxime Proxetil
It is a bactericidal and kills bacteria by interfering with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. It is stable in the presence of beta lactamase enzyme, a number of beta lactamase producing organisms resistant to penicillin/other cephalosporins are likely to be susceptible to cefpodoxime.Cefpodoxime Proxetil is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that is used to treat various bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, skin and soft tissue infections, and others. It is a prodrug that is metabolized in the body to its active form, cefpodoxime, which works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.
The dosage of Cefpodoxime Proxetil can vary depending on the type and severity of infection, as well as the age and weight of the patient. Common dosages for adults range from 100 mg to 200 mg every 12 hours. For pediatric patients, the dosage is typically calculated based on weight. It is important to follow the prescription and doctor's instructions for accurate dosing.
Known hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to cefpodoxime, other cephalosporins, or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
Penicillin senstitive patients. For patients with severe renal impairment the dosing interval is to be prolonged to 24 h. In patients maintained on haemodialysis, dose frequency to be adjusted to 3 times a week after hemodialysis. Paediatrics: Safety and efficacy in infants less than 5 months of age have not been established. Pregnancy: Avoid during pregnancy unless there are compelling clinical indications.
Diarhoea, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, colitis and headache.
Antacids decreases the peak plasma levels, oral anticholinergics delay the attainment of peak plasma level. Probenecid inhibits renal excretion.
