Cefuroxime Axetil
Cefuroxime axetil is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. It is a prodrug that is converted into its active form, cefuroxime, in the body. Cefuroxime works by inhibiting the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall, leading to cell death. It is effective against a broad range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.Cefuroxime axetil is indicated for the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections, including: Upper respiratory tract infections such as sinusitis and pharyngitis. Lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Skin and soft tissue infections such as cellulitis and impetigo. Urinary tract infections such as cystitis and pyelonephritis. Lyme disease in its early stage.
For sinusitis or bronchitis: 250-500 mg twice daily for 10 days. For pneumonia: 500 mg twice daily for 10 days. For skin and soft tissue infections: 250-500 mg twice daily for 10 days. For urinary tract infections: 125-250 mg twice daily for 7-14 days.
Cefuroxime axetil is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cephalosporins or penicillins.
Patients with a history of allergy to beta-lactam antibiotics should use cefuroxime axetil cautiously. Renal function should be monitored in patients with impaired renal function. Cefuroxime axetil may affect the results of certain blood glucose tests. Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis.
Common side effects include: Diarrhea Nausea and vomiting Rash Headache Less common but serious side effects include: Allergic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing, and swelling. Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea. Blood and liver abnormalities.
Concomitant use of cefuroxime axetil and oral anticoagulants may increase the risk of bleeding. Concomitant use with probenecid can increase the serum concentration of cefuroxime. May reduce the efficacy of oral contraceptives
