Cefuroxime Sodium

Cefuroxime Sodium is a broad-spectrum, second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It is effective against a wide range of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis.

Indications

-Respiratory tract infections -Urinary tract infections -Skin and soft tissue infections -Bone and joint infections -Septicemia -Meningitis -Surgical prophylaxis


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to cefuroxime or other cephalosporins -Previous severe allergic reaction to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of gastrointestinal disease, particularly colitis. -Adjust dosage in patients with renal impairment. -Monitor for signs of an allergic reaction, especially in patients with a known history of penicillin allergy. -Use during pregnancy and lactation only if clearly needed and prescribed by a healthcare provider.


Side Effects

-Common: Diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, rash, pruritus -Rare: Anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, pseudomembranous colitis, hematologic abnormalities (e.g., eosinophilia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia)


Drug Interactions

-May enhance the nephrotoxic effect of aminoglycosides. -Probenecid may increase serum concentration of cefuroxime. -Concomitant use with potent diuretics may increase the risk of nephrotoxicity.
