In normal individuals it produces indifference to surroundings, psychomotor slowing, emotional quietening, reduction in initiative & tendency to go off to sleep. In psychotics, it reduces agitation & aggresiveness & controls psychotic symptomatology. Thought & behaviour are gradually normalised, anxiety is relieved.

Indications

Schizophrenia & other psychoses, mania & hypomania. Anxiety psychomotor agitation excitment, violent or dangerously impulsive behaviour. Intractable hiccup. Nausea & vomiting of terminal illness, hypothermia.


Dosage

10-25 mg thrice daily. Children upto 5 yrs.0.5-1mg/kg bodywt thrice daily.Over 5yrs.1/3 of adult dose.


Contra-Indications

Liver impairment, coma. Bone marrow depression, low leucocyte counts.


Special Precautions

Epilepsy. Parkinsonism, cardiovascular disease. Contact skin sensitisation. Paediatrics: Should bot be used below 6 months. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Not recommended. Elderly: Reduced dose necessary.


Side Effects

Jaundice, cardiorespiratory, hypo-tension, respiratory depression, agranulocytosis. Acute dystonias or dyskinesias. Tardive dyskinesia.


Drug Interactions

Additive depressant effective with sedatives, hypnotics, antihistamines, opiates and alcohol. Potentiation of anticholinergic effects of antiparkinson agents. Additive orthostatic hypotensive effect with MAOI. Reverses antihypertensive effect of guanethidine, methyldoa and clonidine. Additive effect with alcohol.
