Cinnarizine

It is an antihistamine having additional anticholinergic, anti-5 HT, sedative and vasodilator properties. It has been found to modulate calcium fluxes and attenuates vasoconstrictor action of many endogenous substances, probably by its action on Calcium movement.

Indications

Improve blood flow to labyrinth and brain stem. Vertigo, tinnitus, Meniere’s disease, loss of memory, motion sickness, cerebrovascular & peripheral vascular disorders.


Dosage

Adults: 25-75 mg thrice daily. Children: Not recommended.


Contra-Indications

-Cinnarizine should not be used in individuals with a known hypersensitivity to the drug or any of its components. It is also contraindicated in patients with Parkinson's disease, hypotension, and severe hepatic impairment. -Alcohol, C.N.S. depressants.


Special Precautions

hypotension, patients should not drive or operate machinery. Paediatrics: Not recommended. Pregnancy: Safety is not established. Lactation: Drug passes into breast milk. Elderly: No special problem.


Side Effects

-Common side effects of cinnarizine include drowsiness, dry mouth, constipation, and blurred vision. Rare but serious side effects may include extrapyramidal symptoms, allergic reactions, and liver dysfunction. -Sedation, G.I. upset, rash, drowsiness.


Drug Interactions

-Cinnarizine may interact with other medications such as sedatives, tranquilizers, antihypertensives, and anticoagulants. It is important to consult a healthcare professional before starting or stopping any medications while taking cinnarizine. -CNS depressant effect enhanced with alcohol, action potentiated by domperidone.
