Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride

Ciprofloxacin Hydrochloride is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat various bacterial infections. It works by inhibiting bacterial DNA gyrase, thereby preventing bacterial replication and growth.

Indications

Treatment of infections caused by susceptible strains of bacteria, including: -Urinary tract infections -Respiratory tract infections -Skin and soft tissue infections -Bone and joint infections -Gastrointestinal infections -Typhoid fever


Dosage

-Adults: Typically 250-750 mg orally every 12 hours, depending on the infection's severity and type. -Pediatric: Dosage must be determined by a healthcare provider based on the child’s weight and the type of infection.


Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to ciprofloxacin or other quinolones -History of tendon disorders related to quinolone use -Severe renal impairment without dose adjustment -Pregnant or breastfeeding women (unless benefits outweigh risks)


Special Precautions

-Use with caution in patients with a history of seizures or epilepsy. -Monitor for signs of tendon damage, especially in elderly patients or those on corticosteroids. -Ensure adequate hydration to reduce the risk of crystalluria.


Side Effects

-Common: Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness -Serious: Tendon rupture, hypersensitivity reactions, seizures, liver dysfunction


Drug Interactions

-May interact with antacids, iron, or zinc supplements, reducing absorption. -Can increase the effects of anticoagulants like warfarin. -May interact with cyclosporine, increasing the risk of nephrotoxicity.
