CYCLOSERINE

It (D-4-amino-3-isoxazolidone) is a broad spectrum antibiotic that is produced from cultures of Streptomyces orchidaceus and Streptomyces garyphalus. It is mainly used as a second line drug for the treatment of tuberculosis

Indications

Pulmonary or extrapulmonary tuberculosis


Dosage

Cycloserine is administered in doses of 15-20 mg/kg/day [500 mg twice daily]. ( Max.1gm/day, in two divided doses)


Contra-Indications

Hypersensitivity ,epilepsy, depression or psyshosis renal failure, alcoholics


Special Precautions

CNS toxicity, folic acid deficiency, megaloblastic anemia & sideroblastic anemia. Paediatrics: Safety not established. Pregnancy: Contraindicated. Lactation: Contraindicated. Elderly: Use with caution.


Side Effects

Dizziness, headache, termors, nervousness, psychotic states, visual disturbances, seizures.


Drug Interactions

Alcohol increases the risk of convulsions . Concurrent adminstration of isoniazid may increase the CNS side effects such as dizziness or drowsiness
