CYPROHEPTADINE
It has H1 antihistaminic, mild anticholinergic and sedative properties. It increases appetite and has been recommended in children and poor eaters, to promote weight gain. It is an appetite stimulant, not a general tonic.Loss of appetite, allergy & pruritis, in migraine and vascular headaches.
Adults & children (7-14 yrs): 12 mg daily in 3 divided doses. Children(2-6 yrs.): Max daily dose 8 mg. Migraine: 4 mg initially. Repeat after 1/2 hr. if necessary. Max in 6 hr. period: 8 mg maintain with 4 mg every 4-6 hrs. Pruritis and allergy: Adults: 4 mg thrice daily. Max. daily dose 32 mg. Children(7-14 yrs): 4 mg thrice daily. Max. daily dose 16 mg. 2-6 yrs: 2 mg thrice daily. Max.: 8 mg daily.
Cyproheptadine is contraindicated in individuals who are hypersensitive to cyproheptadine or any of its ingredients. It should not be used in newborns or premature infants, and caution should be exercised in patients with certain medical conditions such as narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, or pyloroduodenal obstruction.
Caution should be exercised when using cyproheptadine in elderly patients, patients with liver or kidney impairment, and those with a history of seizures. It may cause drowsiness or dizziness, so activities requiring mental alertness should be avoided. Alcohol and other CNS depressants may enhance these effects.
-Common side effects of cyproheptadine may include drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, and urinary retention. Serious side effects such as allergic reactions, seizures, or abnormal heart rhythms are rare but should be reported to a healthcare professional immediately. -Drowsiness, dry mouth, confusion, ataxia, weight gain.
Cyproheptadine may interact with other medications such as sedatives, tranquilizers, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), potentially increasing the risk of adverse effects. It may also enhance the sedative effects of alcohol and other CNS depressants.
