Cyproterone acetate is a synthetic progestin with anti-androgenic properties. It is used primarily to treat conditions related to excess male hormones, such as severe acne, hirsutism, and androgenic alopecia, as well as in the management of prostate cancer.

Indications

-Severe acne in women. -Hirsutism (excessive hair growth) in women. -Androgenic alopecia (hair loss) in women. -Prostate cancer (as part of hormone therapy).


Dosage

-For Acne and Hirsutism: Typically 25-100 mg daily. -For Prostate Cancer: Generally 200-300 mg daily, in divided doses.


Contra-Indications

-Pregnancy. -Severe liver dysfunction. -History of thromboembolic disorders. -Known hypersensitivity to cyproterone acetate or any component of the formulation.


Special Precautions

-Monitor liver function regularly during treatment. -Use with caution in patients with a history of depression. -May require dose adjustment in patients with renal impairment. -Caution in patients with a history of cardiovascular disease.


Side Effects

-Nausea. -Headache. -Weight gain. -Mood changes or depression. -Reduced libido. -Liver enzyme alterations.


Drug Interactions

-May interact with other hormonal therapies. -Use with caution with drugs that affect liver enzyme activity (e.g., enzyme inducers). -Possible interactions with anticoagulants.
